We had our first Owners locker trip at the beginning of May. We are a family of 5 and have always taken about 6 suitcases. We have always wanted to use "Space bags" on our trip, but, since you have to use a vacuum to seal them up, the problem has always been how do you seal them up at the hotel?
We solved this problem by packing a small hand vacuum with a suction tube in our owners locker. We were able to reduce our luggage by half and took only 3 bags for our weeks vacation. When you have 2 little kids in strollers this is a big advantage! We also still have plenty of room for all of our other stuff. Owners Locker totally changed the way we travel.

We use space bags also. While we haven't bought a small vac for the purpose of resucking the opened bags, we have pretty good success simply squeezing out the air. On a scale of 1 - 10 with 10 being the best result with a vac, we score maybe an 8. DW also packs the sytle that are designed to be used without a vac, you simply roll them up. They work well enough provided wrinkles are not a problem.

Space bags have a suitcase version where all you have to do is roll the bag to remove the air. They have a one-way valve, lets air out but not in.

While I haven't needed the space to utilize space bags, I bought some regular 'sweater' storage bags and used them last trip to organize 1.bathing suits and accessories 2. undies!

I found it very helpful in unpacking/repacking. I'm going to try to find some more for this trip to further organize and like the idea of keeping the clothes that sleep in my locker in a plastic bag that I can roll the air out of.

Can't believe that I might finally be organized one day!

As a new user to OL I was planning next trip to try the Space Bags. What kind of small vacuum do you use? Is it electric or battery powered?
Thank You,:)

Betty,

Dave, who started this thread, is in town this week, and if I see him, I'll ask him the brand of vacuum he bought.

John

p.s. I tend to use first names in these forums to make them a bit more friendly...hope you don't mind.

BTW, I'm pretty sure that you can use the DVC vacs to suck out the air in the space bags.

I don't know if all rooms/villas/resorts have the same type vacuum cleaner, but the vacuums in OKW,BCV and VWL studios are not the type that can be used to evacuate the space bags. We brought our space bags down assuming the vacs would work. They didn't.

Here's a link to the travel spacebags that I was talking about.

All you have to do is roll the spacebag to get the air out of it.

Thank you to all. I am going for a quick trip the 27th of June and am going to try the travel space bags for my luggage. I will let everyone know how it worked out. I am not going to visit my OL this visit as I am going to a family event in Lake Mary.

These are great tips on the Space Bags! I didn't think about rolling the air out of the bags. I am definitely going to pick some up before my Sept. trip. Thanks everyone!

Hi Everyone,
Well I did order the travel space bags at the website. However, they did not arrive on time for my trip. I have packed them away in my luggage for the next trip. I am looking forward to trying them on my trip to Disney in late August.
I love the friendly nature of the OL website and whatever this is called.

I have found the travel space bags to be the best for our Disney trips. I did try to use the Space bag with a battery powered pump which did not work. We use the pump to inflate the air mattress we pack in our OL for the times we need an extra bed. I tried using the deflate mode and it was awful.
The travel bags take quite a bit of time to roll out the air.

This will suck the bag down tighter than any vacuum cleaner.

You'll want to squeeze out as much air as possible just to reduce the amount of pumping required.

We used the roll-up space bags when we traveled to China (the real one... no the "Epcot" one!!!) and love them! They allowed us to pack enough clothes and as we were wearing underwear, etc., pack the dirty stuff separately, as well.

Using them in an OL is a great idea...

Take a look at this Reynolds Handi vac site:
http://www.reynoldspkg.com/reynoldskitchens/handi_vac/en/home.asp

This looks like an easily packable, inexpensive method to evacuate air from the traditional Space Bags which do work better than the roll up type.

I have one of these in my kitchen, it is small but that is the problem. The vacuum pump is not a workhorse it struggles to pull a vacuum on a gallon bag. I think it would work fine if you used the gallon or quart bags that are designed for it. If you are going to depend on it to vacuum a space bag you better get two, and a shoebox full of AA batteries.

Another discover I made while walking around Home Depot was Ziplock Big Bags. They come in Large, XLarge and XXLarge. The large and X-large fit perfectly into the OL. I stored clothes in them and squeezed the air out through a crack in the zipper and it did a somewhat good job.

However, I may go the route of the space bags in the future.
