Fantasia Broomstick With Buckets At Disney's All-Star Movies Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 30, 2009

We all have favorite parts of the movie Fantasia...mine is the part with the broomsticks carrying buckets of water...like this one:

VFPV Broom with bucketsblog.JPG

That segment of Fantasia is called The Sorcerer's Apprentice--which is the name of the piece of music we hear as more and more brooms carry buckets of water...much to Mickey's dismay.

The All-Star Resorts may be small on price but there's nothing small about this broomstick with buckets. It's about 40 feet tall and is located at Disney's All-Star Movies Resort (in the Fantasia section, of course). The other sections of the almost 2000 room resort feature Toy Story, 101 Dalmations, Love Bug and Mighty Ducks. The purple van will have to make its way to those sections too...

The stroller itself was great -- it fit through every doorway with ease.

The umbrella canopy kept our two toddlers from the sun.

The individual, fully reclining seats were great for separate nap times.

Kudos to you for another great service.

We look forward to renting from you when we visit Florida again!"

Pumpkin Carving Contest At Animal Kingdom Lodge: the Everyday Adventures Of the Purple Van October 29, 2009

If you drive a purple van to the Disney resorts every day, you never know what you might see. Like today at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. On display at both Jambo House and Kidani Village were entries in the cast member pumpkin carving contest.

Here are some of the entries at Jambo House:

  VFPV Pumpkin Jamboblog.JPG

And here's Cinderella's pumpkin coach at Kidani Village:

VFPV Pumplin Kidaniblog.JPG

The pumpkins will only be on display for a couple of days so if you're at Walt Disney World, it's worth a trip to AK Lodge!

Magic Strollers Review from DISBoards

We were very gratified to see this review of Magic Strollers today on the DISBoards:

"We actually just got back from WDW last week and had rented a single citi mini for the stay from Magic Strollers. WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE! Susan was fabulous in setting everything up. Stroller was waiting in our room when we arrived. It was in brand-new condition and even smelled new! We got the parent organizer with ours to keep a cup, sunglasses, etc in. We did not get the rain cover and I wish we had!! We all had ponchos on, but our stroller was soaked and unusable for awhile until it dried out! The stroller is a breeze to use and fold down. We left our DS3 sleeping in it until the bus literally pulled up, then got him out, folded with one hand, and off we went. We did use a stroller lock the whole time in WDW b/c DH was paranoid it would get stolen. A lock at Walmart is less than $10, whereas theft insurance was like, $25. I'm happy to answer any questions about Magic Strollers that you may have.......will definitely use them again! "

Trout Pass Bar At Disney's Wilderness Lodge: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 28, 2009

if you need another reason to fall in love with Disney's Wilderness Lodge Resort, here it is: Trout Pass Bar.

VFPV Trout Passblog.JPG

I do have a weakness for pool bars and it's hard not to like this one. Walk out of the rear of the lobby and you'll see the pool and the Trout Pass Bar. I highly recommend the pina coladas!

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort Viewed From The Polynesian Resort: the Everyday Adventures Of the Purple Van October 26, 2009

Have you ever stopped to think about just how much water there is at the Walt Disney World Resort?

It's everywhere and I think it really makes the place look great. Here's a view of Disney's Grand Floridian Resort taken from the Polynesian across Seven Seas Lagoon.

VFPV Grand Floridian from Polyblog.JPG

And I think that the water featured at almost all of the resorts really adds to their appearance. Many of the resorts like the Grand Floridian have water right at their back door.

I was dropping Lockers and strollers off at the Polynesian this morning and was struck by this view.

Boatwright's Dining Hall at Disney's Port Orleans Riverside Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of the Purple Van October 23, 2009

Only Disney would commission a shipyard to build a fishing boat like the ones that used to ply the Mississippi to add to the atmosphere of a restaurant..
VFPV Boatwrightsblog.JPG

This real wooden ship under construction is hanging from the ceiling at Boatwright's Dining Hall at Disney's Port Orleans Riverside Resort.

And it's surrounded by the woodworking tools that would be used to build a boat like this.

Maybe it's a boy thing but I've always been fond of this restaurant. I find the boat and all of the tools fascinating.

It's a bit odd to stare at the ceing during dinner but there's lots to see at Boatwrights!

The Rubik's Cube At Disney's Pop Century Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of the Purple Van October 22, 2009

Where on earth would you find a 30 foot tall Rubik's Cube?

Why at Disney's Pop Century resort, of course.

VFPV Pop Rubik's cubeblog.JPG

Disney's Pop Century Resort is the largest of the Disney resorts with almost 3000 rooms and is divided into 5 sections featuring the decades of the 1950's through the 1990's.

This Rubik's Cube is one of the huge icons featured throughout the resort---this is in the 1980's section.

Pop Century is located between Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort and the Wide World of Sports complex.

A Model Ship at Disney's Yacht Club Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 21, 2009

It's not surprising that the lobby of Disney's Yacht Club Resort has a nautical theme.

The first thing you notice is the huge globe.

But behind the globe is a sitting area with two model ships in glass cases.

This is one of them.

VFPV Yacht Club yachtblog.JPG

Unlike its companion resort, the Beach Club, the ceiling in the lobby of Disney's Yacht Club Resort is low...to give you the feel that you're on board a yacht. And there's lots and lots of natural wood.

Take the time to walk through the Yacht Club Resort the next time you're visiting Walt Disney World. It's a large resort but it has a very intimate feel.

The Arcade At Disney's Port Orleans Riverside Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 20, 2009

The theming just never stops at Disney's Port Orleans Resorts.

This is the arcade at Port Orleans Riverside and it looks like anything but the entrance to a room full of electronic games.

In fact, I think these resorts look like a bunch of buildings that were turned into hotels rather than resorts that were made to look like old buildings

VFPV Riverside arcadeblog.JPG

I think this arcade looks more like the entrance to a riverboat ticket office with the destinations listed: Natchez, Baton Rouge and Port Orleans.

All of the Disney resorts are worth a visit to just slowly walk around, enjoying the architecture, landscaping and theming but I've got to say I have a particular fondness for Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter Resorts.

And, as busy as we are delivering Lockers and strollers, I often can't resist a short detour like I did this morning to catch details like this.

You can get to the arcade by walking out of the lobby at Riverside and turning right.

Where Did Magic Strollers Come From? The Survey

The gang at Owner's Locker created Magic Strollers because our Members asked us to.

We had repeated requests to rent strollers so we decided to get a bit more detail of just what our Members wanted.

So we sent out a survey to over 1000 of our Members about whether we should rent strollers....

...and we go back almost 600 responses.

Not only did our Members answer the survey questions, they provided comments that ran some 300 pages!

What did we learn?

-over 90% said we should begin renting strollers and over half of our Members said they would be interested in renting a stroller when they visited Walt Disney World. We were pleased at the overwhelming endorsement of the stroller rental idea.  There were lots of comments about how our Members were confident that we would do it right.

We were  surprised at how many of our Members would want to rent a stroller.  We had never done any demographic studies so we had no idea of who might have stroller age kids or grandkids.

- Our Members told us they wanted a stroller that fit through doors and gates easily, was easy to fold and was easy to steer.  We needed to have cup holders for the parents and a rain cover.

-It was extremely important to our Members that the stroller be clean.  They had to be confident of the rental company and did not want to worry about whether the stroller would be delivered on time.  Strollers had to be easy to rent and the price had to be right.

With guidance like that we had our marching orders.  Renting strollers wasn't just something we should do...it was something we had to do.

And that's where Magic Strollers came from...

The Birdcage in Disney's Grand Floridian Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of the Purple Van October 19, 2009

If it were anyplace else, it would be impossible to miss. But the lobby of Disney's Grand Floridian Resort is so big that it's definitely possible not to notice this rather large Victorian birdcage.

VFPV Grand Floridian birdcageblog.JPG

The couple on the couch were kind enough to let me take this photo with them in it so you could get a feel for just how big the birdcage is.

It sits on a pedestal but it's still about 15 feet tall. If you enter the lobby and walk to the center, it's to your left.

Where Did Magic Strollers Come From?

Magic Strollers is the latest adventure from Owner's Locker.  We rent strollers to visitors to Walt Disney World and the other Orlando area attractions such as SeaWorld and Universal Studios.

Families go to the Magic Strollers site, choose a single or double stroller, tell us their arrival date and arrival resort as well as departure date and departure resort and voila...a stroller is waiting when they arrive and then is picked up when they depart.

Nice idea...but where did it come from?

Actually, it came from Owner's Locker Members.  Not long after we started Owner's Locker, our Members began asking if we would rent strollers.  Disney added fuel to the fire by raising he price of strollers rented in their parks a LOT.

We looked at the business but put it on the back burner because we still had work to do on our core business...Owner's Locker.

But our Members didn't let us keep it on the back burner.  They kept asking and we kept listening.  And after a major upgrade to our warehouse management software, we pushed the button that resulted in the birth of Magic Strollers.  Now we're up and running and loving every minute of it.

The Marina At Disney's Polynesian Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 15, 2009

What is it about Disney's Polynesian Resort? Is it just me or does everything seems to look better there? Like the marina that you see here. It looks very peaceful...like it belongs.

VFPV Poy marinablog.JPG

When my kids were growing up, we would visit Walt Disney World as often as we could. We would always head over to the Polynesian for a day and hang out at the pool in the morning and then rent these small boats before having lunch. It was fun to watch my girls look forward to being old enough to go out on their own.

I recall that they used to be called water mice but I think they are now known as Sea Raycers.

There are lots of places to rent these boats but we always preferred the Polynesian. I don't know why...it just seemed like the thing to do. There's something about this photo that just says "natural."

On The Rocks At Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort And Spa: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 14, 2009

I wonder if Disney has a person whose job it is to come up with the names of bars?

Come on...Banana Cabana at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort and the Gurgling Suitcase at Disney's Old Key West Resort.

Who comes up with these great names?

And how about this one? This is On the Rocks at the High Rock Spring pool at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort.

VFPV On the rocksblog.JPG

I don't know why, but I have this sneaking feeling that the name "On The Rocks" has been around for a while waiting for just the right place.

And I'll even wonder which came first; the name of the bar or the name of the pool: High Rock Spring...hmmm.

I don't guess it really matters. This place looks really inviting.

The Lighthouse At Disney's Yacht Club Resort and Disney's Beach Club Resort And Villas: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 13, 2009

Here's one more lighthouse for you. This one is at the end of a pier on Crescent Lake between Disney's Yacht Club Resort and Disney's Beach Club Resort and Villas.

VFPV Beach & Yacht lighthouseblog.JPG

Crescent Lake is surrounded by the Boardwalk and you can see Disney's Boardwalk Inn and Villas across the lake. EPCOT is to the left of this photo.

I've always. been impressed with the Crescent Lake and the resorts that surround it. Everywhere you look is an excellent view...and this pier and lighthouse certainly add to the atmosphere.

This isn't the only lighthouse at the Walt Disney World Resorts. Other lighthouses that have been the subject of an Everyday Adventure are at Disney's Old Key West Resort (click here) and Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort (click here).

Are there any more lighthouses out there that I haven't run across?

The Butterfly Garden At Disney's Contemporary Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of the Purple Van October 12, 2009

Even if you are a very observant visitor to Walt Disney World, here's something I'll bet you've never noticed before. It's a butterfly garden behind Disney's Contemporary Resort.

VFPV Chrysalis Houseblog.JPG

I had never noticed it and what caught my eye was the butterflies...lots of them attracted to the flowers planted there. And that thing on the white post? It's called Chrysalis House and it is a display of the various life stages of a butterfly (one of which is chrysalis---I only know that because i looked it up!).

I think it's hard to tell where this is even if you carefully study the background. If you look very closely through the trees in the upper left hand corner you can barely see the new bridge between the Contemporary and Bay Lake Tower.

To check it out, head out the back of the lobby of the Contemporary and instead of heading right to the pool, look over to your left.

Monorail Orange Leaves Disney's Contemporary Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 10, 2009

If you drive a purple van around Walt Disney World as much as I do, one of the most common sights is a monorail...heading to or from EPCOT or making the Magic Kingdom Resort loop.

VFPV Monorail Orangeblog.JPG

I see them so much that it's a bit tempting to think of them as being normal. But, of course they're not. And it's certainly out of the ordinary for a monorail to go straight through a building like this one.

The purple van is at Disney's new Bay Lake Tower a lot and we unload our Lockers and strollers right below where the monorails enter and leave the fourth floor of Disney's Contemporary resort.

You can hear them coming and I couldn't resist looking up this morning just as monorail orange was coming out of the building heading to the Magic Kingdom. Hardly an everyday occurrence anyplace else on the planet

The Decades at Disney's Pop Century Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 9, 2009

Disney's Pop Century Resort is a very large resort complex located between Caribbean Beach resort and the Wide World of Sports complex. At almost 3000 rooms, it's one of the largest motels in the country...and believe it or not, there are even more rooms that have been built but never opened.

This part of Pop Century is called The Classic Years and the buildings are themed after the decades of the 50's, 60's,70's 80's and 90's.

VFPV Pop yearsblog.JPG

And that's why you see these rather large sculptures of the decades of The Classic Years.

They are located in front of the main entrance to the lobby on the left hand side. To get an idea of their size, check out the people walking in front of 1960!

The Calypso Trading Post at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 8, 2009

This is the Calypso Trading Post at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort. This photo doesn't quite do it justice...most of what you see here has spilled out of the shop itself which you can just see through the arched entry!

VFPV Calypso Trading Postblog.JPG

Caribbean Beach was the first moderate resort in Walt Disney World. It has around 2100 rooms clustered in six villages of two story buildings named after islands in the Caribbean. The architecture is simple and colorful--just like the islands--and the real beauty is in the lush, tropical landscaping.

The Calypso Trading Post is located in the main building (Centertown) in the Old Port Royale section of the resort. The main pool, marina and the food court are also located there.

The Century Plant at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo House: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 7, 2009

That's not a tree with the pale yellow flowers. It's a flower stalk of the broad-leafed plant at the bottom of the photo.

This is a variety of century plant outside of Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo House. I just noticed it this morning and I think it has been in bloom for only a few days.

VFPV Century plantblog.JPG

It's called a century plant because it takes so long to bloom. But when it does, the plant sends up a huge stalk--this one is about twenty feet tall--that is covered in flowers.

Unfortunately, this flowering process takes up so much energy, that the plant produces a bloom only once and then dies after flowering.

So if you're going to be anywhere near Jambo House in the near future, make a point of walking down the stairs at the rear of the lobby and heading to the animal viewing area to check this plant out...but hurry, the show won't last long...

The century plant is just outside the rear doors from the lobby on the left.

The Wedding Gazebo At Disney's Yacht Club Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of the Purple Van October 6, 2009

Before there was a Wedding Pavilion, there was this gazebo at Disney's Yacht Club Resort.

VFPV Yacht gazeboblog.JPG

It's tucked away in a courtyard and became a very popular spot for weddings. Now it's a great spot to enjoy the sun and great view and perhaps read a book.

As you're walking along the boardwalk towards the Swan and Dolphin, it's to your right. But, look closely...it's easy to miss!

Disney's Boardwalk Inn And Villas In The Early Morning Light: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 5, 2009

Walt Disney World is pretty at any time of day.  But I think it's especially pretty in the early morning light.

VFPV early morning boardwalkblog.JPG

This is the entrance to Disney's Boardwalk Inn and Villas. I took this photo early this morning on my way to drop off Lockers when the sunlight was pretty much sideways. The gold lettering really stands out, doesn't it?

One of the advantages of delivering Lockers to folks before they arrive for their vacation is that I get to see scenes like this every day.

If you've ever been to Boardwalk, I'll bet you've never seen it with no cars or busses. There's a Magical Express truck on the left dropping off luggage but other than that, it's very quiet. And Food & Wine is going on in nearby EPCOT...the calm before the storm.

The Other Larger Than Life Sorcerer's Hat...At Disney's All-Star Movies Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van October 1, 2009

And you thought the only larger than life Sorcerer Mickey hat was at Disney's Hollywood Studios...

...Well how about this one?

VFPV Movies sorcerer hatblog.JPG

This 40 foot sorcerer's hat is at Disney's All-Star Movies resort--in the Fantasia section, appropriately enough.

There are three All-Star resorts, each with about 2000 rooms. All-Star Movies has five differently themed sections which feature huge icons like this one. At the edge of the photo you can see part of a bucket which is carried by a broomstick from the same film...but that's another adventure for another day.
