The Riverboat Sassagoula at Disney's Port Orleans Riverside Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van September 11, 2009

I think I may have figured out where "Sassagoula" comes from! You see the word all over Disney's Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter Resorts: It's the river, the food court, the ferry...but just where did Disney get the name "Sassagoula" ?

And then this morning, after dropping off Lockers, I noticed this model sternwheel riverboat in a display case in the lobby of Disney's Port Orleans Riverside Resort.

Actually, the big brass "S" that is inlaid into the wood floor caught my eye...and then there it was--the "Sassagoula." A three deck, twin smokestack Mississippi River sternwheel riverboat.

So that explains it. That's where "Sassagoula" comes from.

Now the only question is whether there ever was a real riverboat named "Sassagoula" or whether this is just another example of an extremely creative Disney backstory.

Any details would be warmly welcomed!
