The Backside of Disney's Pop Century Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 31, 2009

Yes, this is what the back side of Disney's Pop Century Resort looks like. This picture was taken from the pool deck (before the rains came today). And, if you are even a semi-regular reader of The Everyday Adventures Of the Purple Van, you may wonder why on earth I seem to be so fascinated by the rear entrances to the Disney resorts.

VFPV Pop back sideblog.JPG

I think the short answer is that I think the back is often prettier than the front. Hopefully, I'm not nuts, but it seems to me that in case after case, resort after resort, the rear entrance is where you really get the full impact of the place. And let's face it, that "POP" is rather difficult to miss.

Maybe its because you mainly see the front entrance when you first arrive and you get to focus this one every other time you enter the resort. Maybe it's because so much space in the front entrance is taken up with driveways and bus stops or the canopy that each resort has to provide a bit of protection from the rain.

Yet again, I'm reminded of the sign my mom had on the rear door of the house I grew up in: "Back Door Guests Are Best."

Meet Owner's Locker Member Kitty Malone

Ron and Kitty Malone at Grand Fla Christmas 08.jpg

Kitty Malone Muth and Ron Muth have been residents of Louisville, KY for the last three years. Originally from Wichita, Kansas, they have lived all over the country as their radio jobs took them. They toyed with the idea of being DVC owners since its inception, but it took them until December, 2008 to finally pull the trigger. They bought into Saratoga Springs, and added a few points at Bay Lake Towers to their contract after they saw the model. They like to get down to Disney twice a year. They have been Owner's Locker Members since 2008. You can find Kitty on Facebook, and Ron invites you to check out Radio-Info.com.

Introduce yourself to your fellow Owner's Locker Members!

Ron and I are in radio, which is why we have lived all over the country. We were in Miami when we decided we wanted to have children, and that took us back home to Wichita where the grandparents and family were. Once we became empty nesters, career took back over, and we are now in Louisville. Ron is a board editor for a radio website, Radio-Info.com, and works from home. Kitty is the National Sales Manager and General Sales Manager of four radio stations. They have identical twin daughters – Erika, a teacher in Kansas City, and Ali, an event planner in Seattle. Ron was the Disney fan from childhood; and while Kitty liked it and visited Disneyland as a kid and had her Mousekateer ears, she has since grown to love it and wishes she still had those original ears!

Quick Facts:

§         DVC Owners since 2008
§         Favorite Characters: Jiminy Cricket and Jose Carioca for Ron, Mickey    for Kitty, and Alice in Wonderland for both (more on that later…)
§         Favorite Resorts: Saratoga Springs, Grand Floridian
§         Favorite Theme Park: Too hard! Magic Kingdom, if we HAVE to choose.
§         Favorite Attractions: Buzz, Soarin’ , Tower of Terror, Haunted Mansion
§         Most valued item in your purple locker: rain gear and hairdryer

What brings you back to Central Florida so often?

Remember that part about how we both like Alice in Wonderland? Our daughter joined the College Program in 2002. (By the way, I highly recommend it! They learn so much, and it looks great on a resume!) She got a full-time job in Entertainment after that (there is the connection with our favorite character…) She is mouse height (another clue…). So we visited her a lot, and she still goes back to work a few shifts seasonally to keep up her employment status. We go with her! It is feeling like a second home.

Why is Walt Disney World such a frequent vacation destination?

Because it not only allows you, it FORCES you to leave your worries, your problems, your stress behind. You are engulfed in fantasy and fun. Being a bit of a work-a-holic, I am always checking email, solving problems, selling advertising. But I find I am able to put it aside at Disney, and the longer I am there, the more the feeling of Hakuna Matata comes over me. And there is so much to do! You can always eat at your favorite places and go on your favorite attractions, but there is always something you haven’t done or someplace you have yet to visit.

Do you have any traditions you follow when youre at the Resort?

We have to cover Downtown Disney and the shops on the Monorail hotels. We always find something we can’t live without. We like to make our home not overly Disney, but enough to make us long to go back soon. A meal at Alfredo’s used to be a must…now it has become Boma. We also like to have a Mickey Rice Krispy treat…or two..

What tips can you offer to other Walt Disney World visitors?

Go to the left. Everyone else bears to the right when they enter. If you see something you can’t live without, get it then. Don’t wait, thinking it will be in another store later on. You can have it sent to your room or the front of the park if you don’t want to carry it. Be nice to the cast members and talk to them. They put in long days, and really strive to be nice to everyone and make it a magical time for visitors. It can pay off. Don’t do what you always do. Try something different each trip you make. You will find new favorites that way. Finally, don’t go commando. Don’t over-plan. It is supposed to be a vacation. You don’t have to do it ALL – remember, you will be back!

Whats the one thing you think everyone else is missing out on at Disney World?

For the frequent traveler, take some of the tours and classes. It won’t destroy the magic, it will enhance it. For instance, I was on a tour at a conference with my company that included the laundry facilities and the greenhouses. It made me more aware of what goes into running the resort. Also, RELAX. You don’t have to always DO. Sometimes it is wonderful to sit outside in a park or resort, sip a drink or have an ice cream, and watch people. Seeing kids get so excited meeting Mickey or Alice is a wonderful thing.

And we have to askwhats in your purple Locker?

Jeans and jackets for the cool days, the rain gear we hated to pack but never had when we needed it, alcohol to make those relaxing evenings even more relaxing, a hair dryer that keeps my hair straight for an hour or two, the basic toiletries, socks, and enough t-shirts so we can carry on smaller suitcases and not have to do the checked luggage thing!

The Marina Lighthouse at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 30, 2009

If I asked you to name a resort in Walt Disney World where you would find a lighthouse, I'll bet you would either say Old Key West or Yacht Club. But how about Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort?

VFPV Caribbean Beach Marinablog.JPG

That's where you'll find this lighthouse...at the marina at Caribbean Beach.

I don't know about you but just looking at this photo makes we want to put my feet up and relax.

There was a huge storm last night but we have some very blue skies today.

Meet Owner's Locker Member Don Jones

Don Jones.jpg

Don Jones and Christopher Gannon have lived in Las Vegas, NV for six years. They’ve been owners at Disney’s BoardWalk Villas since 2003, and in 2005 added Old Key West to their contract. Both visit Central Florida several times each year.  They have been Owner's Locker Members since 2008.
Introduce yourself to your fellow Owner's Locker Members!

I’m an information technology journalist, columnist, teacher, and speaker. I’ve been working as a freelancer for about 10 years, and have about 14 years in the industry total. We came to Las Vegas after living in an RV for two years, full-time, one winter of which was spent in Kissimmee right next to Walt Disney World. Before that, we were in Philadelphia. Our first visit to Walt Disney World together was in 2000; I had visited in 1994 with my parents, and on that trip I got to be an “extra” in the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular!
Quick Facts:
§         DVC Owners since 2003
§         Favorite Characters: Figment, Stitch, and Tigger
§         Favorite Resorts: BoardWalk and Wilderness Lodge
§         Favorite Restaurant: Jiko
§         Favorite Theme Park: Epcot
§         Favorite Attractions: Soarin’, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Toy Story Mania
§         Most valued item in your purple locker: Sunblock
What brings you back to Central Florida so often?

For me, it’s actually conferences. I’m an IT journalist (I blog at www.ConcentratedTech.com and am a columnist for www.TechNetMagazine.com, amongst others), and that often means speaking engagements at technology conferences. Orlando is home to about half of the US conferences – Las Vegas is home to the other half. I’m not a big humidity fan, so we chose to settle in Las Vegas and make Orlando a frequent destination. The other reason, of course, is this “Disney World” resort – maybe you’ve heard of it?
Why is Walt Disney World such a frequent vacation destination?

Even when it’s for work, Disney World has an ability to just make me let the real world go. I’m a huge Disney fan, although not one of the ones who likes to pick on everything the company does. So something in my brain is just hard wired, I guess, to relax and let go when I walk through the turnstiles of a park, or settle down in the lobby of one of the hotels, or enjoy a beverage at one of the bars or lounges. I can literally feel my shoulders relax, and my brain stops worrying about e-mails and conference calls. There’s not many other places where I get that sensation; most other places, I have to make an effort to relax. At Disney World, it just happens.
Do you have any traditions you follow when you’re at the Resort?

Absolutely! As DVC owners, we’re fortunate in that we get to the World often, so we don’t have to have the precision-planned, hectic vacations that some families do. We make a point of eating at Jiko, although Sanna is going to become a new favorite for us, I can tell you. We sit out the Hollywood Studios parade at the Tune-In Lounge. If it’s raining at Animal Kingdom, we’re in the outdoor bar near Tusker House. In fact, sitting at bars actually makes up a huge portion of our vacations – I know, we could do that in Las Vegas, right? But we love to try new cocktails (we used to be food writers), visit with the bartenders, exchange Cast Member gossip when possible (like new attractions that might be coming), and just relax in a themed, no-worries environment. In fact, we enjoy the on-property lounges so much, part of our new iPhone app (WDWPal) is a listing of every on-property lounge and its normal operating hours – so we’d always be able to figure out which one was closest and open!
What tips can you offer to other Walt Disney World visitors?

Use your discounts. We have DVC, Annual Passholder, Disney Visa, Tables in Wonderland, and AAA (I told you we were big Disney fans). Sometimes it’s tough to figure out which discount is best – we’ll often just hold out all the cards to a server or cashier and make puppy dog eyes at them, hoping they’ll help. That’s the other big thing our WDWPal iPhone app does: It lists every merchandise and dining discount on property, so you can always get the best discount for whatever you’re buying at the moment. When we were testing the app on our last trip, we saved something like $75 additional dollars on discounts we’d forgotten about.
My other tip will have to be a plug for that WDWPal app: Check it out at http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=319707817&mt=8 (iTunes Store link). It’s only $2, which you’ll easily save with just one remembered discount. It’s also got a Disney Dining Plan credit tracker, meaning you can easily track how many of each credit type everyone in your party has – individually! – and make sure you get the most out of your Plan. The app’s whole theme is about getting the most from your entitlements… and, of course, about finding the nearest bar!
What’s the one thing you think everyone else is missing out on at Disney World?

With all the Web sites like AllEarsNet.com and MousePlanet.com, it’s hard to believe that anyone misses anything! I think for us, resort-hopping is the big secret. Disney’s upper-end resorts are just as themed as any of the parks, but they offer a bit more relaxed an environment – everyone’s not rushing to the next attraction. You can wander around and take in the sights, enjoy a beverage (we’re Dole Whip fans, and Captain Hook’s at the Polynesian has it on self-serve) or snack, and just relax. That’s what vacation is all about – not hitting every attraction possible. Make friends with Cast Members who are servers – they’ve got tips and advice most people never get to hear. And I guess for me personally, the Electric Water Pageant is an overlooked attractions. It sails along the Magic Kingdom resorts’ shorelines every evening. It’s kitchy (Christopher hates the “electrosynthomagnetic” musical sound), but I find it charming.
And we have to ask… what’s in your purple Locker?

Well, we have two. The aptly-named “Clothes” locker has just that: Clothes. We get on the airplane with our Amazon Kindles, iPhones, and boarding passes. We keep Purex all-in-one washer/dryer sheets in the locker, so we just do laundry before we leave. No checked baggage, no waiting at the carousels – it’s a much better way to start and end the vacation. We can get our boarding passes at our resort when we leave, and head straight to security. The other locker, “Vacation Stuff,” has a wine opener (why are there no Mickey corkscrews?), slippers for in our room, swim suits, water shoes, all the other non-clothing stuff we miss when we’re away from home. Giant-sized toiletries, the usual stuff most folks keep in the locker, I expect. Nothing exotic – but it’s those little comforts of home that make our vacations so much more pleasant and relaxing, and it wouldn’t be possible to have them without the purple box.

The Belle Vue Lounge At Disney's Boardwalk Inn and Villas: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 29, 2009

I think this looks like a really neat living room in a big mansion. It's actually one of my not-so-secret hideaways where I can take a break to make phone calls, send e-mails or do posts on Facebook or Twitter. It's called the Belle Vue Lounge and its located just off the lobby of Disney's Boardwalk Inn and Villas.

VFPV Belle Vue Loungeblog.JPG

If you turn right off of the Boardwalk lobby, you cross a bridge as you head to the Inn part of Disney's Boardwalk Resort and there it is...just waiting for you to plop down in one of the comfy chairs and relax.

The Disney resorts are full of little nooks and crannies and lots of times folks are in such a hurry to get from their room to a park that real gems like this don't even get noticed.

In the evenings, the Belle Vue becomes an intimate lounge with a very friendly bartender but during the day, it's mostly empty like it was today. If you need a quiet place to relax, read a book, do a bit of work or just chill, it doesn't get much better than this.

Mardi Gras Parade At Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 28, 2009

If the quality of a resort is determined by its theming, then Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter must be rated A++++!

I honestly don't think any resort at Walt Disney World is themed any better than French Quarter. Yes, I know it's a "moderate" resort but I think someone must have told the imagineers that it was a "deluxe" by the looks of it.

VFPV Mardi Gras Parade figureblog.JPG

This huge, colorful Mardi Gras Parade statue guards the entrance to Doubloon Lagoon, the resort's extremely creative pool. You can get a feel for just how big this sculpture is by looking at the relative size of the people and umbrellas.

To get to the pool, walk straight through the lobby and you'll run right into it. But, take your time, you don't want to miss any of the surprises along the way.

The Dolphin Fountain At Disney's Old Key West Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple van July 27, 2009

I wonder why something as simple as this fountain can be so memorable?

VFPV Dolphin fountain at old key westblog.JPG

My family has been going to Disney's Old Key West resort since May, 1992--not long after it opened. We've seen all sorts of changes over the years (don't get me started) but luckily this fountain is not one of them.

One of the first things my kids would do every trip was swing by the pool and walk over to the end to pass by this fountain. And I obviously pass by it every once in a while when the purple van stops at Old Key West.

It's not elaborate at all but, knowing Disney, it's probably the only one on the planet. It's just one of those countless small things that help make pleasant memories. Just glancing at that fountain brings back so many memories of my girls growing up at their second home.

Sunday Morning Animals At Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Kidani Village: The Everyday Adventures of the Purple Van July 26, 2009

Here's a quick pic of what the savannah looked like at Kidani Village this morning!

VFPV Sunday morning animalsblog.JPG

What a way to put a smile on someone's face. After dropping off Lockers this morning (one of which was named "Shocker Rocker Locker full of Histamine Blocker...and Cheese" (now would I make that up?)) I stopped by the operations department to make sure a note was left on our Member's reservation. As I left operations, I headed out to the lobby to get back into the purple van.

But I couldn't resist just stopping for a minute or two and enjoying this view...and now at the end of a very long day, I thought I'd share it with you. I'm not going to get any sympathy, am I?

The Best Stop Light View In Disney World: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 25, 2009

You won't be surprised to learn that if you spend a good part of the day driving around Walt Disney World in a purple van, you inevitably get caught at a few traffic lights. And if you do it as much as we do, you come to appreciate that the view at some stop lights is better than others.

VFPV best stoplight viewblog.JPG

This one is on Epcot Resorts Boulevard where it intersects with Buena Vista Drive and it gets my vote for the best.

Epcot Resorts Boulevard is the loop that runs from Disney's Boardwalk Inn and Villas, under the water bridge by EPCOT, past Disney's Beach Club Resort and Villas, Disney's Yacht Club Resort, The Walt Disney World Dolphin, The Walt Disney World Swan and Fantastia Gardens. Buena Vista Drive is the main road that the entrance Disney's Hollywood Studios is located on.

I won't go as far as to say that I like having to stop at this light...but if it does turn red, I at least get to appreciate the amazing detail on the Hollywood Tower Hotel! And at night, I can roll down the window and listen to Fantasmic while waiting for the light to turn green.

Bay Lake Tower At Disney's Contemporary Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 24, 2009

Today's "Everyday Adventure"  is really more of an "Extraordinary Adventure."  The purple van drivers were really excited when we got a call asking us to stop by Disney's latest resort:  Bay Lake Tower At Disney's Contemporary Resort.  We were hoping for a tour...and we got one alright...but is was of the luggage room!

VFPV Bay Lake Towerblog.JPG

Like everyone else, the purple guys are really excited about this resort--and it looks fantastic. But we were asked to visit today by the managers coordinating the opening of Bay Lake Tower. One of the Disney resorts task force members knew about us from Disney's Beach Club Resort and Villas and wanted us to go over how we handle Lockers with the folks who supervise the front desk, operations and bell services at the Contemporary.

We've certainly made lots of deliveries to the Contemporary, but our presence will increase dramatically when the new Bay Lake Tower opens next month. Resort management just wanted to make sure everything involving our Lockers was handled smoothly.

It was great. We were shown an out-of-the way entrance to the luggage room that will very convenient and we discussed a dedicated area for us to drop off Lockers so the bell services staff would know exactly where to look.

Likewise it will be easy for us knowing that Lockers that we need pick up will always be in the same place. We also walked through the procedure how to get the notification on our Members' reservations that their Locker had been delivered so that are made aware of this at check-in. (We used to have to stand in a check-in line to do this!)

This will make life fantastically efficient for us and the resort. And, I have nothing but praise for the Disney resorts crew for wanting to make sure things move smoothly for their guests.

We all see bits of magic "on stage" as they call it, but there's an awful lot of that pixie dust stuff going on behind the scenes as well!

Gee, what a difference a couple of years makes. When we first started Owner's Locker, we actually worried that the purple van might be turned away at the security gates of the resorts.

On the contrary, we have been welcomed at every resort we service and we've grown to the point where now we are just thought of as part of the fabric. I apologize if this doesn't sound very modest but it made me and Brian very proud to meet in that luggage room today!

Ahhhh, Stormalong Bay at Disney's Beach and Yacht Club Resorts: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van

Just how far can you go when designing a resort pool before it becomes a water park? How many features can you add before you in effect create another theme park?

The fantastic pool shared by Disney's Yacht Club Resort and Disney's Beach Club Resort and Villas--called Stormalong Bay--seems to be right at the edge of both of those questions. In fact, I feel a bit silly even calling it a pool.

VFPV Stormalong bayblog1.JPG

And this picture really does very little justice to the magnitude and scope of Stormalong Bay. You can see that the pool has lots of sand!?! This is the kiddie area and the sand the kids are playing in is supposed to be in the shape of the Florida peninsula.

I think it would take an aerial view to really show all of Stormalong Bay's tricks. All I can say is that if you ever have the opportunity to go there, jump on it.

Sadly, you'll have to be staying at either Beach or Yacht as the pool is sooo popular that employees check for room keys before letting you in. You'll notice that this pic was taken at a bit of a distance....sometimes when delivering Lockers, I'll stroll between the two resorts, like I did this morning, and am constantly amazed at the scale and features of Stormalong Bay.

Banana Cabana At Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 22, 2009

Show me a good pool bar and I'll show you a good pool. Banana Cabana is the pool bar at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort.

VFPVBanana Cabana Blog.JPG

It's simple and matter of fact but that's the whole idea of the Caribbean. Things aren't fancy--just functional. And Banana Cabana does a very good job of being a convenient, colorful watering hole next to the pool at Caribbean Beach. The multicolored umbrellas over the tables add to the tropical feel of this popular spot. The pool is right behind the Centertown building that houses the food court and shops in the Port Royale section of Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort. Here's the drink selections courtesy of AllEars.

How About A Carriage Ride At Disney's Port Orleans Riverside Resort? The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 21, 2009

I don't know about you, but a couple of thoughts run through my mind when I see these carriages: how relaxing; and geez, these people think of EVERYTHING!

VFPV Riverside carriage rideblog.JPG

The more I wander around Disney property (as purple van drivers are wont to do) the more amazed I am every day at the little things that Disney does to make Walt Disney World Special.

It seems like everywhere you turn, there are details that don't have to be there and little surprises like this. I know, the carriage rides aren't free but they create the atmosphere whether you ride in one or not and just add immensely to everyone's enjoyment.

Try to stop by Port Orleans Riverside on your next visit to Disney World. It is well worth the trip!

Port Royale Centertown at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort: The Everyday Adventures of the Purple Van July 20, 2009

This is Centertown at Port Royale at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort. It's where the shops, food court and pool are located. You really can't see much in this photo beyond the landscaping but I've done that on purpose.

VFPV Port Royale Centertownblog.JPG

Caribbean Beach Resort was Disney's first moderate resort but that didn't mean that they didn't bother theming it. It's also aged gracefully as the landscaping has matured making the place incredibly lush.

I really like the multi-trunked palm tree that is in the center of the roundabout. It's a fantastic specimen. And the flags of the various Caribbean nations really give it the island feel.

I definitely think Caribbean Beach is worth a visit to at least drive through. If you can, stop for a while and enjoy the shops. Something tells me I'll be sharing more pics. I really, really like this place.

Every Ride, Every Day NON-STOP! The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 19, 2009

"Our Motto: Every morning, every night,
every ride, every day...
NON-STOP!"

I saw this car in the parking lot at Disney's Port Orleans Riverside Resort today and it made me think: I wonder how often something like this happens at other vacation destinations?

VFPV Riverside carblog.JPG

Before my incarnation as a purple van driver, I think my exposure to white shoe polish on car windows was limited to newlyweds on their homeymoon with "just married" and perhaps a few other choice comments put on by well-wishers
.
But it's really not that unusual to see cars around Disney property decorated like this. These folks (whom I'm guessing are the Zouboulakis's) wanted to tell everyone along the way from their home (North Carolina plates) to Orlando where they were going and what they were going to do once they got here.

I thinks it's neat but I've got to tell you that I'm often amazed at how excited people are about coming to WDW.

The '50's Wall At Disney's Pop Century Resort: the Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 18, 2009

In the lobby of Disney's Pop Century Resort is a wall with a time line for each decade. The years run along the top of the wall. This is the wall from the 1950's and it includes tons of two and three dimensionl items to remind you of those years. A transistor radio, a TV with rabbit ears, rollers skates and publicity stills of the original Mouseketeers. It reminds me of the queue area of Rock 'N Roller Coaster.

VFPV Pop'50s wallblog.JPG

I really like Pop and Owner's Locker Members do too. Seems like we're there all the time. The terrazzo floors (very '50's and '60's) and splarkly bits are very effective. And how about those seats.

Pop Century is sort of a resort in progress. This "section" of the resort is called The Classic Years and contains almost 3000 rooms in 10 buildings. Additional buildings have been constructed but never themed or opened and now there are rumors that the whole concept of the resort may change. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Jambo House Staircase: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 17, 2009

So just how pretty can a staircase be?

I think the short answer is, not much prettier than this!

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo House is the last of the deluxe (non-DVC) Disney resorts and sometimes I think the Imagineers pulled out all of the stops on this one. This staircase leads from the lobby down to restaurants Boma and Jiko, stopping at a fantastic bar, Victoria Falls, along the way. Isn't it magnificent!

VFPV Jambo staircaseblog.JPG

So often, we're in a hurry to get someplace and think of a staircase as just a way for getting from point A to point B. But the next time you're in Jambo House, walk down these steps and then find a seat at the bottom of the stairs, turn around and just spend a few minutes staring. I'll often do just that after dropping off Lockers. Layer after layer after layer of detail. Who would have thought something like a flight of stairs could be this much fun?

The Back Door of Disney's Boardwalk Inn and Villas: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 16, 2009

Like Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge, Disney's Boardwalk Inn and Villas sits atop a hill. Well, it looks like it sits at the top of a hill. You certainly drive up an incline to get to the lobby. But all three of these resorts are built with the lobby on the second floor. Lots of dirt and landscaping just make it look like a hilltop.

VFPV Boardwalk rearblog.JPG

But this "hill" doesn't exist in the back which means we have this fantastic view of Disney's Boardwalk Inn and Villas from the rear.

This "lower level" of Boardwalk is extensive with restaurants like Flying Fish all the way down to ESPN on the left and shops and restaurant all the way down to Jellyrolls on the right.

Up above, the roofline is loaded with interesting signs, lights and architectural elements. I think all of this tends to take your eye away from the view of the back of Boardwalk you see here. The huge lawn, the staircases and the balcony off the lobby are highlights of the Boardwalk resort that shouldn't be missed.

The Walt Disney World Dolphin Lobby: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 15, 2009

If you've never been inside the Walt Disney World Dolphin (or it's sister resort, The Walt Disney World Swan), I strongly suggest that you stop in, just to see what the public spaces look like.

Both resorts were designed by architect Michael Graves. I'll describe the architecture as playful but no matter what word you choose, it won't be "boring."

Dolphin lobbyblog.JPG

This is a view from the lobby looking down toward the exit to the Boardwalk. It looks like you're inside a tent, doesn't it! The whole hotel is like that. Everywhere you turn, you see the unexpected. Sort of like a stage or movie set. Not your typical Disney hotel but fun nonethless...and worth a visit.

Everything Pop: The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 14, 2009

Disney's Pop Century Resort is one of those places that sort of hides it's size. The Grand Floridian LOOKS huge while the fact that Pop Century has almost 3000 rooms doesn't quite jump out at you at first.

VFPV Pop shopblog.JPG

But have a look at the size of Everything POP, the resort's shop. It looks like something you'd see at Downtown Disney. And while Pop Century is a value resort, it's loaded with Disney details that don't have a value look at all. The design on the floor and the domed ceiling, for example. And I particularly like the Scandinavian hanging lights--reminds me of when I was based in Copenhagen!

Lots of our Members stay at Pop so we're there all of the time. And whenever the purple van is droppping off Lockers here, I'll often grab another Diet Coke (or two) from Everything Pop.

Caution: Bear Crossing the Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 13, 2009

I love this sign. I see it almost every day on my way into Wilderness Lodge. Just another small Disney touch that makes this place special.

VFPV Bear signblog.JPG

The next time you head to Wilderness Lodge, it's on your right before you go through the arch and get to the guard house...and do go slowly in case a bear wants to cross the road.

The Neverland Club At Disney's Polynesian Resort: the Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van

Walt Disney World is not just for kids. It's for grown-ups, too. And when the grown-ups want to have some time on their own, there's no better place for the kids than the Neverland Club at the Polynesian Resort. Many resorts have group activity centers where parents can ditch the kiddywinks for a few hours, but the Neverland Club is the grandaddy of them all. And if my four daughters are any judge, the Neverland club is also the best.

VFPV Neverland blog.JPG

It ain't cheap and you need a reservation but our kids wanted to go there at least once per vacation.

And it's great...if the little ones are begging to go, you don't exactly feel guilty about sneaking off on a date.

The Infamous Gurgling Suitcase At Disney's Old Key West Resort The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 11, 2009

What is the deal with The Gurgling Suitcase? Why is it that this tiny bar is so popular with Disney Vacation Club members?

It's certainly not the biggest or prettiest bar in Walt Disney World. And I'm willing to bet that if you looked up "hole in the wall" in the dictionary, there would be a picture of the Gurgling Suitcase.

Most Disney resorts have a fantastically themed bar around the pool and "afterthought" is certainly the word that comes to mind here.
VFPV Suitcase1blog.JPG

But it's one hopping little joint and it seems to be a must stop for fans of Old Key West.
I can say that in the old days, when this was the only Disney Vacation Club resort, it was a great place to see old friends. If you used DVC points at the same time of the year, the chances were good that you'd run into the same folks you saw last year. And the "Suitcase" is known to have bartenders that stay a long time and tend to remember names and faces.

VFPV Suitcase2blog.JPG

So now, I thinks it's become a place to stop by before or after dinner and just see who you might run into. I alway catch myself slowing down when I walk past to see if there's anyone I know. Check it out

What's So "Moderate" About Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort? The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 10, 2009

Why is it that so many resorts are more attractive from the rear? Maybe it's because cars aren't an issue at the back door. Here's what Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort looks like from the rear. Really, really nice.

VFPV French Quarter from backblog.JPG

And it reminds me that I've always questioned why a resort as attractive as this is classified as a "moderate" resort. I'm extremely fond of French Quarter and I often wonder where the scrimping was done was because to me it's as pretty as any other resort...and far prettier than some more expensive resorts. Maybe the rooms aren't as luxurious or spacious but I don't think the theming gets any better than this. French Quarter has an established, cozy feel.  It also has a killer pool that was one of my kids favorites when they were growing up.  While you're planning your next trip to Walt Disney World, make sure you carve out some time to stop by French Quarter and enjoy what a pretty resort this is.

Sometimes We Deliver More Than Fun Stuff

At Owner's Locker we're not exactly short on positive job reinforcement.  Come on, we deliver fun.  People love seeing us because we have their vacation stuff.  But today was a bit special and our job was even more satisfying than usual.

VFPV Asharblog.JPG

These three Lockers were delivered to Disney's Saratoga Springs resort this morning for one family.  We store that large box as well and I'd like to share a story about it.

The owners of these Lockers live in Scotland and visit Walt Disney World a couple of times a year.  One of their sons is partially paralyzed as the result of a soccer injury and his time here has always been difficult. Two of the purple Lockers have medical equipment which had made their travels much easier for the last couple of years.

The parents recently contacted us about storing a special chair for their son and they had one custom made and shipped to us.  That's what's in that box and we delivered it for the first time today to their resort.  They never thought it would be possible to have something like this for their trips to Orlando.

We're honored to store an item like this and I've got to tell you that dropping that off knowing that it would make life more comfortable for that young man really made us feel good.

The gang at bell services at Saratoga Springs were excited as well.  That's Steve, Janet and Carlos

Of course it's satisfying to know that we make our Members' vacations more fun. But knowing that we've helped someone be able to be comfortable and enjoy their time at Walt Disney World--that's REALLY nice

Is This A Disney Resort? The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 8, 2009

Well, it looks like it might be the Contemporary, Polynesian or perhaps the Grand Floridian. But it's none of those. I was delivering a Locker to the Gaylord Palms Resort this morning when I looked to my left as I came out of the lobby and saw my favorite palm, a traveler's palm.

VFPV Gaylord palms blog.JPG

It's the perfectly proportioned tree at the end of this sidewalk. You don't see them very often and this is one of the nicest specimen's I've seen.

It's very easy to think that Disney has captured the market on attractive resorts in Orlando but the Gaylord Palms is an excellent example of great quality in a non-Disney Resort. It's right across the I-4 from Pop Century and it's worth a trip for a drink or meal just to see the place. Or, if you're lucky enough to be a purple van driver, you get to check stuff like this out every day.

The Flower Cart at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 7, 2009

Here's yet another example of Disney's attention to detail. This little fellow pulling a flower cart is at the entrance to the shop at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. What an effective eye catcher this is. Just draws you right into the shop.

When we drop Lockers off at the luggage room, we always tell the front desk to make a note on our Members' reservation....which means I get to see this guy every time we're at Coronado Springs.

Planning A Trip To Walt Disney World? Here Are 10 Sites to Bookmark...including Owner's Locker

Amanda Rose has written an interesting article listing her top 10 sites to use when planning a trip to Walt Disney World.  Owner's Locker (www.ownerslocker.com) is #7 and here's what she has to say about us:

7.Owners Locker - The Owners Locker is a great website for all those people that travel to Walt Disney World frequently, whether they are part of the Disney Vacation Club, or are able make it to Disney one or two times a year. This is a site that essentially sells storage for you, so that you are able to pack lightly and have every day essentials at your finger tips. The storage is better known as purple lockers, and are dropped off directly to your resort, whether you stay onsite or off. The locker itself is 13"x22"x20", which is a great amount for storing extra sweaters, George Foreman Grills, Water Jugs, toiletries, etc. The cost is $99 a year, but with the rising costs of luggage fees on planes, for some this just makes sense. http://www.ownerslocker.com/lockers/

We're really excited that we made Amanda's list.  Here's a link if you'd like to read the entire article:

The Signature Lobby Sculpture In Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Kidani Village The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 6, 2009

If Disney is good at anything, it's in detail. You see it everywhere. Not just in the parks and attractions but all over property. And particularly in the resorts.

VFPV Kidani Lobby1.JPG

The lobby and restaurant area of Disney's latest resort, the Disney Vacation Club's Kidani Village that's part of Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge is extremely well done. And this sculpture is prime evidence of that.

One of the really neat things about driving the purple van is that we get to see neat things like this every day. And i've got to tell you that the more time you spend in the resorts, the more you see.

Sarasota Power Boat Races: The Everyday Adventures Of the Purple Van July 5, 2009

No, the purple van didn't head to the beach today. It was actually was very busy delivering and picking up Lockers. But the purple guy with the camera had a day off with his family and we hit the beach in Sarasota (Lido Key to be precise). I thought I'd share what was a fun day and also remind you that there is life outside the parks and you shouldn't miss some of the local events while you're in the Orlando area..

Sarasota 3.JPG

The Sarasota offshore power boat races are always held over the 4th of July holiday and the big race was today. As you can see, it's a rather popular event. Just have a look at all of the tents and umbrellas people have set up on shore. Oh yes, there are some of the race boats in this photo, too!

Here's a closer picture of one of the boats in today final race. Those babies are BIG and LOUD. I'm not quite sure what the helicopter escorts are all about but there's so much spray, I'll bet they help guide the boats when it's difficult for the crew to see.

VFPV Sarasota5.JPG

I don't know how many people were at the beach today but you can imagine that it was one big party. What fun...and boy are we all sunburned!

Pop Idol Is In; So what's out? The Everyday Adventures Of the Purple Van July 4, 2009

This is the "rear" entrance to Disney's Hollywood Studios from World Drive. If you always stay in Disney resorts, the Disney tranpsport busses don't use this entrance and, in fact you may never have seen it. You may well have been on the road on the overpass that has the Hollywood Studios sign on it, though.

VFPV Studios film strips.JPG

So what's up with these giant film strips? They've been there for quite some time and they had gotten quite faded from the direct afternoon sun. Particularly the panel for the Extrene Stunt Show on the far left and the Indiana Jones one.

Last week, Disney began replacing the film strips. The Stunt Show panel has been redone and now there's a panel for Pop Idol. Indiana Jones still looks tired and faded.

So what did Pop Idol replace?

As often as I drive by this entrance in the purple van (at least once a day), I can't for the life of me remember what it was...any clues?

How About A Drink at Petals at Pop Century? The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 3, 2009

I don't want to give you the impression that we stop for a drink while we're delivering or picking up Lockers...but we do like to hang around the resorts after hours...and doesn't this place make you want to order a pina colada?

VFPV Petals.JPG

This is Petals, the pool bar at Disney's Pop Century Resort. If you walk out of the rear of the check in lobby (Classic Hall), you're on the pool deck and Petals is just to your right. And it's as inviting as it looks. It gets its name from those flower power petals that seemed to be everywhere in the late 1960's.

Make that a margarita for me...on the rocks, with salt.

Can You Guess Which Water Park? The Everyday Adventures Of The Purple Van July 2, 2009

It's not Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach.

Fooled you! It's not a water park at all. It's the kiddie pool at Disney's new Animal Kingdom Lodge Kidani Village.

VFPV Kidani kiddie pool.JPG

Kidani Village, a Disney Vacation Club resort, has several flashes of brilliance and the pool area is one of them, In fact, I think folks wil want to stay at Kidani just for the pool--the way people like to stay at Beach/Yacht for Stormalong Bay.

The Back Door To Disney's Grand Floridian Resort the Everyday Adventures Of the Purple Van July 1, 2009

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort is impressive from any angle but I think it is particularly attractive from the rear

VFPV Grand Floridian back door.JPG

This shot was taken from the pool looking towards the main lobby building. Unlike the later resorts--Wilderness Lodge, Boardwalk and Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo House--The Grand Floridian is all at ground level.  And the landscaping  takes a back seat to the Victorian elegance of the building itself.

Love this resort!
